Overwatch and World of Warcraft were Down Temporarily Due to DDoS Attack on Blizzard



DDoS attacks have become a new normal for gaming companies as they have been dealing with them pretty often. A DDoS attack is a hostile attempt to create disorder in the traffic generated by a server. The attack is performed by overloading the server or the surrounding infrastructure with an influx of internet traffic.

Blizzard was one of the companies that suffered from a DDoS attack recently, this resulted in many of their popular titles suffering downtime, such as Overwatch, World of warcraft and more. When a DDoS attack takes place, the players suffer as a result, as the games don’t work and the players are stuck with nothing to play.

Their most recent DDoS attack was acknowledged by the company through a Twitter post. In the post they acknowledged the attack and mentioned that this issue may result in high latency and disconnections for some players. They mentioned that the company is actively working to mitigate this issue.

The issue came as an annoyance to many players as they were irked by the fact that Blizzard has been facing these attacks a lot recently. Due to that the precious free time that players want to invest in their beloved games is going to waste. The players have also voiced their frustrations about Blizzard’s security and wish that they were compensated for the time that was wasted.

Fortunately, Blizzard was prompt with solving this issue and got its servers up and running as soon as possible. They posted a tweet stating that the DDoS attacks that were being monitored by them have ended. They also posted connection troubleshooting steps for the players still facing issues with logging in. Mac

  • Reset your network devices to make sure your router hasn’t become flooded with data.
  • Run Software Update to check for pending updates to software, drivers, and firmware.
  • If you’re using a wireless connection, optimize your internet connection to rule out a connection issue.
  • Release and renew your IP and flush your DNS to resolve any network conflicts.
  • Close all other applications to resolve software conflicts and free up resources.

Windows

  • Reset your network devices to make sure your router hasn’t become flooded with data.
  • If you’re using a wireless connection, optimize your internet connection to rule out a connection issue.
  • Update your drivers and operating system to resolve any compatibility issues.
  • Release and renew your IP and flush your DNS to resolve any network conflicts.
  • Close all other applications to resolve software conflicts and free up resources.
